Through their partnership with West One the Everyday team delivered a project to Westminster City Council reviewing the impact on traffic flows on reducing the number of traffic signals in their area.
In March 2010 the team carried out surveys over three 24 hour periods, from mid-night on a Friday night to mid-night on a Saturday night and for a 48 hour period on a Monday/Tuesday night through to midnight on Wednesday/Thursday night.
The objective of the study was to collect as much “pre switch-off data” relating to vehicle and pedestrian behaviour at the nominated junction. Information was collected both manually by a team of three recording all vehicle & pedestrian movements and digitally using three DVR cameras located on a tripod and pole some 18’ above street level.
Over the three 24 hour sessions the team were able to produce detailed statistics about the numbers of vehicles, their speeds at the junction and report on pedestrians behaviour at the junction, when crossing. Westminster were able to use the detailed analysis when reviewing what future plans to consider with facts to back up their proposed changes.
